Water & Waste Water
The City of Dubuque
Municipal water service is provided to all residential and commercial areas within the city limits of Dubuque. Although the City of Dubuque lies adjacent to the Mississippi River, no surface water is ever used in the water supply. For the last 100 years, the City has sourced its municipal water from underground wells. Four of the current nine wells are deep wells at 1800 feet. These wells provide consistently high quality water. In 1997 Dubuque was awarded the Best Municipal Water by Berkely Springs International Water Tasting. It is the only Iowa city to ever take first place. Current elevated storage capacity of the City of Dubuque water plant is at 15,000,000 gallons and total capacity is 18,000,000 gallons.

The City of Dubuque Water Pollution Control Department provides sanitary sewer services to all residential and commercial areas within the city limits. The sewage treatment plant uses a secondary pure oxygen activated sludge system. It has a rated capacity of 15,000,000 gpd. Average load is currently at a rate of 10,000,000 gpd.
